Antique Frame Dropped and Busted: Just Like Life… Pick Up The Pieces!

Posted · 3 Comments

Did you know, that if you drop an old frame and pieces are busted off… you can put them in a baggie… staple the baggie to the back of the frame… and when you get around to it… the frame restorer can probably use the pieces again to put the frame back together?! And you might save yourself some money.

This frame hit the floor when the nail in the wall gave away. A nail actually, doesn’t hold very well if its just put into plaster board (no wood behind the plaster). They make hangers especially for mounting framed items into plaster board. Do it right and you’ll avoid expensive repair bills. Anyone live in earthquake or hurricane country? Yea, that’s what I thought….

Scott, I’m in need of your help. My wife and I just bought an old painting with a period frame while on vacation. The dealer, shipped it to us in Dallas, TX (we saw your website at http://www.fairparkmurals.com... great job!!! wow!) and in transit, the frame was broken… or a piece was shaken loose.

Can you recommend someone to help us with what seems to require a quick repair?

Phillip, Sorry to hear about the damage. A good way to get a referral for old frame repair is to ask a painting conservator! Seems like an odd suggestion but a good conservator probably deals with a quality frame person.

Call Helen Houp in Dallas. She’s a great person and does really good work. She may not be interested in doing the work herself but she can probably refer you. You’ll need to look her number up.

Also, you can contact Julie Stephenson, a conservator that I have worked with personally. She may be available to help you. her email address is juljactex48@yahoo.com

By the way, in case you are a do-it-yourself type of guy, you can download the chapter from my book on frames (See “Products” at the top of this page) which will help you though a simple repair like you’ve described.

Say “Hi” to either or both of them for me. Best wishes.

Really interesting about frames. I love frames too and when you consider the high cost of reframing, this is good money saving info! I liked your other post too about recycling old frames. Your posts are fun to read!
