About Scott Haskins
Scott M. Haskins, author of “Save Your Stuff” series, has worked in the US and Europe as a professional art conservator and preservation expert since 1975. Fine Art Conservation Laboratories specializes in painting preservation and restoration services to the general public, the art trade and institutions nationwide. Although clients send artwork for treatments nationwide, door to door services are provided to clients in California from San Diego to Monterey/Carmel, through Las Vegas to Salt Lake City. His team travels nationwide to work on site where mural conservation work is performed.
He is also an expert witness in the Los Angeles Supreme Court system and on the part of the federal government regarding public art issues. He has done consultation work for a long list of notable organizations including Pope Paul VI’s family, the Shroud of Turin project, the Historical Dept of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and the Getty Conservation Institute, the US Federal Government among many others. He also is a grant reviewer for the Institute of Museum and Library Services, a program of the US government.
In response to a request at the time of the Northridge Earthquake (Los Angeles) in 1994, he wrote a booklet on “How To Respond After An Earthquake – taking care of collectibles, heirlooms and keepsakes” of which 500,000 were distributed in Los Angeles by the Bank of America Corp. His 1st book was published in 1996, “How To Save Your Stuff From A Disaster,” and became the most sold preservation manual in the world (4,000 copies). Mr. Haskins “road tested” his Save Your Stuff message for the general public as an adult education teacher for 8 years on how to preserve your treasured family history items, perfecting his workshop strategies and lecturing/teaching methods.
He has been personally involved in ten “major” disasters and has consulted with individuals, corporations and governments on innumerable other “incidents.” Mr. Haskins speaks internationally on emergency preparedness for collectibles and family history items. He also regularly exhibits and speaks at Hurricane Preparedness conferences/expos and for conferences on Genealogy and Family History.
In 2013 Morgan James Publishing in NY published the long anticipated “Save Your Stuff in the Workplace,” (which includes a continuing education program) written specifically for government and corporate in house preparedness and public outreach efforts. Mr. Haskins can be hired for collection assessments, consulting and preservation issues prior to the occurrence of a disaster (prevention). His team travels nationwide to perform collection surveys. He conducts workshops, speaks at functions and works with corporations and their sponsors to maximize their efforts for public outreach and fund raising. He provides free tips and articles for newsletters for companies that redistribute info for public outreach and provides ongoing continuing education, recognizing the essential value of keeping the “Save Your Stuff” conversation alive and fresh. His most recent book, Save Your Stuff – Collection Care Tips, a multimedia 210 page e-book ebedded with 35 how-to videos, is distributed worldwide through partnerships with online genealogical companies of which FamilySearch.org is a partner.

January 1986 to Present: FACL, Inc. (Fine Art Conservation Laboratories) in Santa Barbara, California. Director, Chief Conservator of facility which specializes in the conservation of easel paintings (panel, fabric), murals (affresco, tempera, oil), works of art on paper and period frames. FACL, Inc. provides services for clients throughout the United States. The moveable artwork is treated in the 5,000 sq. ft. laboratory located in Santa Barbara, CA. On-location projects (murals, surveys) are performed each year throughout the USA. Three well experienced painting conservators with support office and lab personnel make up the team
February 1984 - January 1986: Chief Paintings Conservator for Art Conservation Laboratories of Santa Barbara, Inc. a privately funded regional conservation lab servicing collections throughout California. Director of all conservation procedures for paintings and paper including treatments, documentation, research.
September 1978 - February 1984: Conservator of Fine Arts at Brigham Young University, Provo, Utah. The facility primarily serviced the Permanent Art Collection of BYU and the Museum of Church History and Art of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in Salt Lake City, Utah. Responsibilities included the organization of the new 3500 sq. ft. lab in 1978, administration of the program, Chief Conservator, head of Conservation Committee, participant on the Acquisitions Committee.
Education
October 1977 - October 1978: Post graduate internship at Ex Monastero della Trinitá Museum. Worked on affrescos, panels and canvases under Mr. Paolo Bacchin, Conservator (ICCROM, UNESCO).
October 1975 - October 1978: Three year art conservation program at Lombardy regional conservation center, Ente Nazionale A.C.L.I. Istruzione Professionale, in Botticino (Brescia), Italy. Program recognized and supported by the Istituto Centrale del Restauro (ICR) in Rome. Instruction emphasis on easel paintings, affrescos (murals) and polychromed sculpture. Degree awarded with honors. Master's Degree Equivalent in US
